ONEHUNGA FIRE BRIGADE.
The members of the Onehunga Volunteer Fire Brigade held their annual social on Saturday night in the Orphan's Hall. The Mayor, Mr. J. E. Cowell, presided, and presented the medals won by the members. Firemen Paterson and Salt received medals for five years' service, and Treasurer Filmer a three years' certificate and also a special prize, donated by Mr. Soinerville, for the best all-round fireman during the year. A two years' bar, making 23 years' service in all, was presented to Foreman W. Hill, Foreman T. Prior and Secretary C. A. Osborne. Fireman S. Young received a bar for two years' service. Numerous toasts were honoured, interspersed with musical items. The formation of a Fire Board was referred to t>y several speakers, and Mr. T. J. Watts, secretary of the Dominion Association said the new system would provide good positions for those who proved their efficiency. The volunteer system had worked well in the past, but the community now demanded still more efficient means of fire prevention.
