BOROUGH COUNCIL S DEBT. NGAKUAWAHIA'S HOXOTJR VINDICATED. CBy Telegraph. -Own Correspondent.) NGAEUAWAHIA, this day. At a meeting last night the Borough Council rescinded a resolution to pay John Burns and Company £350 interest on an overdue account, and decided, pursuant to the vote of ratepayers, to pay the full amount claimed, £.62. This closes a keen discussion on the subject. The trouble now disposed of arose through the Borough Council be'ng unable to meet an account for material supplied by John Burns and Company. They agreed to pay the bank rate of interest while the account remained unpaid, but on a question as to the legality of this course being raised, a compromise was arrived at whereby the company agreed to accept a lesser sum. A new council coming into office repudiated but, after a good deal of controversy, and, on the understanding that their action w-ould be validated by legislation, the council has now agreed to adopt the more honourable course of discharging their indebtedness in full.
