DEVONPORT AFFAIRS.
(To the Editor.) Sir.—At last the Devonport Council lias decided to adopt a by-law regulating the speed of vehicles on the roads, but who is to see it carried out! Will the councillors personally take any interest in it? Will the police keep a watch, or will the Council official appointed do his duty? I'm afraid that this momentous by-law will meet with the same fate, as "the one dealing witli smoking in buses. Notices "No Smoking" are placed in some (not all) of the buses plying for hire in Devonport, but bless their hearts, none of the officials or councillors seem determined to have it observed,'as very often in a crowded bus with ladies and children, some "pup" lights up his cigarette, and is insulting if spoken to. The drivers are apparently not instructed to stop the practice, and so it goes on. If a few lines were inflicted, as they talk of doing at Northcote there might be a clean up. Talking of the latter, the Council are having a great clean up week from the 22nd to 29th inst, and urge the residents to take heed. This makes mc smile. I wonder if the councillors realise what a filthy state the paths and channels are in, and that it would be more to the point to first set an example. Never in my residence of the borough, over 35 years, have the paths and channels been in such a disreputable, dirty and disgusting state. — I am, etc., DISGUSTED RATEPAYER.
