ARRESTS EFFECTED. FOUR YOtJTHS IN COURT. During the past few weeks a number of burglaries have occurred in the city and suburbs, and the detectives have been hard at work in an endeavour to effect an arrest. Acting-Detectives Barling, Sutherland and McWhirter have now made a capture, j On a recent Sunday afternoon a shop in France Street, Newton, was broken s into, while O'Rorke's Rising Sun Cafe, ' Wendel's W r ine Store, and a tobacco- , nist's shop in Great North Road have also been visited, while an attempt was ' made to break into a store in Surrey Crescent. Last night at 8!30 Acting*Detectives Barling and McWhirter were in Durham Street, Detective McWhirter concealing himself along with the pro- ' prietor of the Doncaster Tearooms in- * side the premises fronting Victoria J Street. , Detective Barling waited outside the premises. After a few minutes four young men were surprised. Three were inside the building and one was waiting outside by a window. Both officers gave chase and Detective Barling managed to arrest one of them after a desperate struggle. The other three dashed away and could not be apprehended. However the detectives were familiar with the associates of the youth under arrest, and then secured evidence wliich justified them in making four other arrests, all youths of sixteen. The young man first arrested appeared in the Police Court this morning, and was remanded on a charge of breaking and entering with intent to commit a ; crime. The other four appeared before Mr. J. W, Poynton, S.M., this afternoon, • on chaTgea of breaking and entering. On the application of the Chief Detoc- . I five, they were remanded to appear on \September 25. Bail was allowed.
