Kostieh,- the first great ' chess muster to visit Xew Zealand, con- I eluded his tour of the Dominion last ■ evening, when he played simultaneously ) against 41 opponents, which is a record I for Xew Zealand. This strenuous task occupied nearly five hours, it being I after midnight before the last game j • was disposed of. Mr. Kostich made the good tally of 34 wins, 0 draws (against \ Messrs. It. H. Abbott, A. E. Leyland, t ■J. G. Grierson, C. Andreae, A. B. Miller, I and C. M. Cracken), and only one loss J ' (to Mr. R. J. Coates, who succeeded in i ! queening his extra pawn). Leyland, president of the Auckland Chess Club, addressed a few i I happy words of farewell to Mr. Kostieli, 1 who leaves to.-day for Sydney. He felt , sure that their distinguished visitor had s i infused new life into Xew Zealand chess, I and that he had been a great help to the game in many ways. (Applause), s> Mr. Kostich, in reply, said that on the * eve of his departure for Australia lie -j wished to express hearty thanks for the ■ many kindnesses shown to him in Auck- 1 land, ami also in the other centres that he had visited. He was really pleased ] with the friendly treatment he I»a<l i received in Xcw Zealand, which he hoped to revisit in 1927. He would henceforth be able to take a much closer interest i in the chess of this Dominion than had j hitherto been possible for liim, and he j was pleased to learn from many sources that Xew Zealand enthusiasts would watch his career with added interest as 3 a result of his visit. -(Applause.)
