CITY V. ATHLETIC.
The teams were :— City.—E. Brown, L. Brown, S. Crewther, G. Davidson, J. Smith, VVetUerlU, Mitchell iiawkes, Cargiil, Buss, Mac-Kay, McDonald, Ruby.
Athletic—Whalley, Seager, McGregor, Christmas, JJiuuiii, Wilsou, .Lucas, liad.ey, Webb, Mason, Stevenson, Uraluini, Clarke. Athletic kiekc-d on', aud Kuoy at once started .a City passing rush, but (jiauaui intercepted a pass, and ho aud Smith earned piny bac-K to City's cud. ±i. isrowu. City's full-back, secured, and Athletics were penalised for not allowing him to play the ball. Lou Brown then gathered up the leather in City's tweuty-nve, and made a fast bolo run down the line. He short kicked, but the ball bounced out. Athletic gained the ball from the resultant scrum, but Crewther got possession and went up with L. Brown. However, a forward pass by Crewther spoilt a great chance. Lucas, Wilson, Draflin, and Christmas were pronfineut in a tine piece of passing down towards City's territory, but Bass cleared well once he got the ball. L. Brown cut right across the field and passed to Crewther, who gave a short kick over the line. In a great race between Ruby and Stevens the Athletic player won and forced. Wetherill and Crewther headed a strong attacking movement, which ended in G. Davidson getting the ball, to score an easy try under the posts. Crewther converted. City 5, Athletic 0.
After being hard pressed for several minutes. Athletic livened up, Hadley getting through on his own and passed to Graham. With only a few yards to go Ruby tackled well and saved a try. The City backs then came av«ay fast and gained a lot of ground. From a mid-field serum Crewther broke away, and with only Whalley to beat he took no chance* and passed to Cargill on the outside. Cargill flew over easily, and Crewther added extra points. City 10, Athletic 0.
Athletic relieved the pressure temporarily until Mitchell gained the ball from a scrum on Athletics' twenty-five, and passed to Bass, who registered. G. Davidson potted a goal. Almost immediately following the half-way kick Wetherill passed a long one over to Crewther. who scored. Davidson missed the kick. City IS, Athletic 0
A City passing rush, in -which McDonald, Brown, and Bass were associated, culminated in the latter romping over under the posts. Hawkes missed an easy shot. A high punt by Graham shifted the game down to City's end, where the red and blacks were penalised. Seager took the kick, which went over the bar. City 21, Athletic 2. At half-time Athletic were pressing City, but failed to get ovw. City IS Athletic 0 SECOND SPELL. On resuming, the Athletic forwards broke through with the ball at their feet and Graham and McGreeor enrienvnnred to rick up and pet across. Crewtber relieved with a long kick down linp, but Draffln cut in and set the Athletic forwards going. Bnss was penalised for obstruction and Drnffln. Wilson and Mason followed up the free in great style. McGregor tried to bnllock his way through when five yards from City's line. E. Brown collared and Wetherill cleared. Brown and Wetherill were responsible for some pretty passing down the side line, and then Crewther took a hand. Brown managed to get over, but Cnrgill failed with his kick. City 24, Athletic 2. Draffin and Wilson dribbled the ball throueh the opposing side and Soasrer dashed in to score a fine try for Athletic. He converted the try himself. City 24, Athletic T. Crewther intercepted and made a run on his own, but was pushed nut. Play was then removed to the other line where Graham obtained and kicked hard. City's full-back, E. Brown, received and kicked right into Christmas' hands. Chrlstmae dashed across and gave to McGregor, who notched a try. Seager failed to convert. City 24, Athletic 10. Kuby made a lightening run after picking up from the ruck, and passed over to Crewther. L. Brown, who was alongside, accepted and got over to run round and place the ball under the - posts. Mackay missed. City 27, Athletic 10. Another City onslaught ended m Mackay forcing his way over. Crewther. was successful with the kick. City 32, Athletic just on the call of time, L. Brown scored aeain. G. Davidson failed to convert. The game ended: City 35 Athletic !0 Mr. Saunders controlled the game.
