MACHINING THE ARMY. There are two military schools of opinion on the question of "machining", the Army, says the "Army and Navy Gazette." Cavalry and artillery have strong views on the horse question, because both may be called upon to operate where traction is at a disadvantage. Our warfare is not all in civilised countries, and mounted men and horse draught cannot be wholly displaced by machinery or aeroplanes. The school of thought, which wishes to give increased mobility and greater striking ' power to the Army, is in essence right, but in an Empire such as ours the equipment provided must be based on European conditions, plus more primitive methods for wilder terrain where machines are at a disadvantage.
