WORKERS' DWELLINGS.
, FROM BAD TO WORSE. SIXTEEN HOUSES EMPTY. : Sixteen of. the total of fifty-three houses- erected by the Government in the Northeote Settlement at. Eapantii are at present unoccupied, and the prospects of finding tenants for them are by jno means encouraging (says the "Lyt- ; telton Times'"). ! 1 Three of the empty houses were recently being used as dormitories for boys attending St. Bede's College, but as they are no longer required for that purpose they have been handed back to the Government. The settlement has never been popular with home-seekers, and its unpopularity is increasing rather than diminishing. In February last there were fourteen empty houses, and a couple of months ago the number had been reduced to eleven. Since then, however, the three houses rented by St. Bede's College have been vacated, and some of the tenants of other houses have shifted out of the settlement. Of the 37 tenants only about half have signed an agreement to purchase their houses under the workers' dwellings scheme. * Meanwhile the empty houses are getting into a state of disrepair, and it is ' probable that they will require a good deal of money spent on repairs to them before they will be occupied again. j
