CHINESE SERVANTS.
STRIKE IN CANTON. TRADE UNION MOVEMENT. FOREIGN QUARTERS QUARREL (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10 a.m.) CANTON,. July 20. The strike of Chinese domestics in the Shamecn foreign quarter is assuming a serious aspect since 2C labour unions bave allied themselves. The strikers" efforts have repealed the British Consular restrictions upon servants' entry and departure in the Shameen section. These restrictions require that all Chinese who leave that quarter after nine at night shall have passes bearing photographs. Those who protest declare that this puts them on the same level as criminals, and declare that the Cargo Boatmen's and Shipping Coolies' T'nions, which are important bodies, will also join the strike. Threats have been made against the sailors on foreign vessels for the purpose of stopping supplies for foreigners, and this has been partially successful, although Shameen residents arc sucepeding in obtaining daily supplies from Hongkong.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
