SMALLPOX IN AMERICA.
A GRAVE SITUATION. HEAVY MORTALITY. (Received 11 a.m.) WASHINGTON", July 20. -Scrgeou-General Hugh S. Cumming (Public Health Service Expert) issues ;t statement expressing apprehension at the growing number of smallpox cases. "- The presence of this disease in 35 States is threatening serious consequences unless State officials exercise the greatest viglianee, and insist on vaccination and revaccination, especially during the coming winter, when smallpox is usually more prevalent. A total of 595 cases were reported in a recent week, compared with 371 for the corresponding week of 1923. The disease is more frequent in the mid-west, with Detroit as the worst sufferer (36), and Indianapolis' next with 45. Urban centres this year report an excess of three times the number of cases compared with 1923. High mortality is also being indicated, the Pittsburg rate being 20 per cent of those stricken.— ( V and X.Z. Cable.)
