LOEB AND LEOPOLD.

PLEA OF COMPOUND INSANITY WILL DOLLARS SAVE THEM ? GREAT INTEREST IN TRIAL. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Tleceivpd n.so a.m.) I XKW YORK, July 20. A Chicago message reports that according to alienists in the employ of tlio millionaire fathers of Leopold' and Loob, the two youthful criminals were suffering from compound insanity. It is understood these alienists will testify at the forthcoming trial that both youths were reasonably sane individually, but when together possessed an interlocking personality which impelled them to commit "crimes that neither would think of committing if apart. Indications are that the trial will create a sensation. One paper suggested broadcasting a verbatim report of the Court proceedings, in that manner enabling listenersin all over the I'nited States to hear everything as it goes on in Court. Judge Caverley, however, announced his strong objection to such a proposal as he expects unpublishable evidence will be given such as young people should not be allowed to hear.—(A. and X.Z.) Loeb and Leopold, both brilliant graduates and morally debased, admitted the murder of the boy Franks (also the son of a millionaire) in order to see him "react." They regarded the adventure as a new sensation for people who could buy anything. They planned the murder minutely, and supposed there could be no chance of discovery. Either Loeb's or Leopold's horn-rimmed spectacles were found nearby the drain in which the body of Franks was found. The typewriter with which these unspeakable persons wrote a note (after the murder) to Franks senior, demanding ransom for the '■kidnapped" boy, was thrown into a creek, but its disappearance caused suspicion, and it was recovered, and identification proved. With few exceptions, American papers appear to believe that money will purchase the freedom of two people who may be regarded as unique in the annals of crime.
