MAIN HIGHWAYS SCHEME.
ASSISTANCE IN FINANCE. I (By Telejraph.—Own Correspondent.) STRATFORD, this day. I Xhe matter of finding the necessary ! funds for carrying out constructional work under the Main Highways Act is causing some consideration amongst local bodies throughout the Dominion. Some councils which have gone in for loan work on a large scale-at high interest will doubtless have difficulty in finding the contributions necessary. It is felt that as the work under the high- ! ways scheme is of national importance ] local bodies should be able to obtain funds for their contributions on the i most favourable terms without the necessity of competing with one another lon the money market. Two suggestions are being made to county councils asking co-operation, and copies of these were . received at to-day's meeting of the local ' County Council.. The first, from the Horowhenua County advocated that a loan be raised by the Government for the purpose of lending to local bodies interested in the construction of roads under the Act. The second suggestion was from Te Kniti, when the Waitomo County suggested that the Government should consider amending the existing legislation to enable sufficient loans to be obtained from the State Advances Department for the purposes of the Act. The Stratford County decided to supj port the Horowhenua suggestion.
