NEW LYNN'S INFANT SCHOOL.
TO BE OPENED ON MONDAY. Although on Monday next the new infant school at New Lynn will be ready for occupation, it will not by any means provide all the necessary accommodation required. The rapid growth made by this district during the last few years has compelled the educational authorities to maintain an almost continuous building programme. The total number of scholar- at present on the roll is 530, and others are waiting to be enrolled. A number of children have had to be taught in the basement of the main school during the past six months under the most trying conditions, as on dull days these places arc almost in total- darkness, besides, not being sanitary. ' The new building, which was commenced in June, is already overcrowded and the Department agreed during the present week to add another class room accommodating a further fifty scholars. An official opening ceremony was to have been performed by the Hon. C. JParr, Minister of Education and member for the district, but this has been postponed until after the session. In order that these infant children shall enjoy every comfort the headmaster (Mr. W. J. Ellis) and his staff, assisted by a band of willing lady workers, have set themselves the task of raising at least £100 for the purpose of purchasing musical instruments and other internal furnishings not provided by the Department. There appears to be little doubt that the sum aimed at will be realised, a3 New Lynn has a fine record in raising money for the benefit of its children. The Department gives a subsidy on money raised for this purpose.
