SANDERS CUP CONTEST.

SOUTHLAND KEEN TO GET IT. AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION TO DECIDE. The contest for the Sanders Cup by the 14ft one-design class which is "held j annually in January between boats representing the various provinces, is jalread3- creating considerable interest, I especially in Southern yachting circles. |So far there have been four contests, three of which an Auckland boat has | won. The first and third contests were .held in Auckland, the second and fourth !in Dunedin and Wellington waters. It I lis the privilege of the winning centre ' Ito say where the next year's contest ! should be held. As it has been held twice in Auckland, the local a»-ociation j i_as been considering the advisability, in j the interests of the sport, that it should I (again ask another centre to conduct the • races. j When at Wellington last year the Southland representatives were very I keen on having the next contest in Half j | Moon Bay, Stewart Island, and as this j matter is to be decided at a meeting of the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association on Tuesday, the following wire has been received this morning by the chairman, Mr. J. B. Johnston, from the Southland League:— "We shall greatly appreciate your honouring us with the next Sanders Cup contest at Stewart Island, and can assure you of a right royal welcome, good water to sail on, and a good time. We take the liberty of wiring you, knowing the good sporting spirit of Aucklanders. We are confident that arrangements can be made to assure a highly successful contest." | Another centre which is keen to see ; the contest in their waters is Napier, and the Napier Sailing Club has also I sent an application for 1925 to be held there. Canterbury yachtsmen favour , Southland's claim, as do the Dunedin I men. It should be remembered that in 1926 Dunedin will be holding an Exhibition, and this centre's claims for the contest have been generaUy conceded for that year. In view of this fact, it may not be wise to send the contest to the , far South two years in succession. The I claims of Auckland, the holders of the ' cup, are not to be lightly passed over. To hold tho contest here would give an impetus to the 14-foot class and to yachting generaUy. All visitors are given a good reception, and home with pleasant recollections of the contest, even if they do not take tbe cup with them.
