ENGLISH COUNTY CRICKET. GENTLEMEN V. PLAYERS. LONDON, July 18. Rain yesterday interfered with all the county cricket matches. Following are details of yesterday's play:— In the match against Gentlemen, the Players scored 514. Hobbs 118, Hearne OS, Roy Kilner 137, and Tatc 50 were the principal scorers. Gentlemen replied with 130. Freeman took six wickets for 52 runs. Essex made 354 in their first innings against Sussex (Freeman 113, O'Connor 78). Sussex have lost eight wickets for 146 runs. Against Somerset, Yorkshire compiled 342, Rhodes making 100. Young took three wickets for IS runs. — (Reuter.) TENNIS IN AMERICA. NEW YORK, July 18. The tennis tournament at Glencoc, Long Island, was continued yesterday. In the fourth round of the men's singles, Fred Kalms (Australia) defeated Kinsel, 6—l, C—3; G. L. Patterson (Australia) defeated Wesbrook, o—3, 6—2. In the second round of the men's doubles, Kalms -and Schlesinger (Aus tralia) defeated Parmelee and Buynitzky (Chicago), 6—2, 6—4. Patterson and OHara Wood (Australia) defeated Hayes and Squair (Chicago) in the third round, 6—3, 6—4.—(A. and N.Z.) UNIVERSITY TENNIS. STANFORD BEATS AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY, July 18. At tennis, the Stanford University defeated the Australian Universities in the doubles, winning two matches. The singles ended evenly, each 'side winnin<* two matches.—(A. and N.Z. Caible.)
