ALARM IN CANTERBTJRT. IMPORTERS TAKING RISKS. (By Tclesraph.— Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The potato market, still in reverse gear, is bumping its way over a sorry patch of road. Those passengers whose destination lies'forward arc experiencing a real alarm, for there are no indications of an impending change in direction. Within three weeks prices have gone back 20/ a ton, a recession operating to the steady profit of oversellers. Whites now are worth £5 7/G a ton f.o.b. South Island, which on the week is a recession of 7/6, while for August and September £5 10/ is the value. Heavy purchases of Victorian potatoes are causing the mischief. So far matters are going swimmingly for Auckland buyers, but there is one possibility some of them must now have in mind. This possibility is that Canterbury interests, failing to dispose of their potatoes in the usual way, may be stampeded into consigning their supplies, with possibly disastrous effect on the Auckland market, j__..
