BURGLAR IN UNIVERSITY.
CUSTODIAN ASSAULTED. MAN SEVERELY HANDLED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The activities of persons with burglarious intentions have been the subject of complaint from householders in various parts of- the city and suburbs lately. Several premises have been entered and articles removed. One evening this week Mr. Brooks, custodian of the Victoria University College, on returning home, noticed an unusual noise in an upstairs and went up to investigate. When he reached the landing a man sprang at him out of the shadows, knocked him down, seriously assaulted him, and then the intruder cleared out, leaving the unfortunate cusItodian lying on the floor, with _is face considerably bruised by the man's flst, work. At one stage of the struggle Mr. Brooks appeared to be getting the upper hand, but his assailant was more active and stronger. When Mrs. Brooks returned home a little later she found her husband in a tottering condition. He declared someone had tried to murder him, and then collapsed. Medical aid was summoned, and Mr. Brooks was found to be suffering from bruises and laceration on the back of his head. It is unlikely that he wiU be able to resume his duties for several weeks. The man who committed the assault gained admission by breaking a pane in a kitchen window, which enabled him to release the catch. No booty was obtained. Parties of college students later were, engaged in a fruitless search for the miscreant, without success.
