WAREHOUSE OFFICE ENTERED.
THIEF TAKES BOX OF CIGARS. AND EIOHTEENPENCE. Tho premises of Messrs. Heather, Robcrton, Ltd., warehousemen, Fort Street, were entered by a burglar on Thursday night, but the intruder gained little for his 1 rouble. Entranco was gained by forcing a lavatory window at the rear, and smashing the lock on the door. Apparently ho had found it impossible to get into the warehouse, but he made his way to the office, where desk drawers were searched. In one he found cighteenpenco in silver, which he pocketed, but ho missed a small tin cashbox, which had not been placed in the safe. The box contained a small amount of cash. A box of 50 cigars, worth about 20/, was stolen from the manager's office. It is surmised that the intruder was disturbed at his work, or that he was a youth with little knowledge of the cracksman's "art." A number of safes in the office bore no sign of having been tampered with in any way.
