MINER OVERWHELMED.
WASHED DOWN A RACE. HIS CONDITION SERIOUS. (By 'Xclcstapn. —Press Association.) HOKITIKA, Thursday. A 'well-known miner of Rimu, Mr. ■I Arthur Clifton, at one time chairman of i the Westland County Council, while engaged in sluicing operations this after- : noon was overwhelmed by a fall of earth from the face, washed into the sluice boxes and carried to the end of the tail i race, a distance of'7oo yards. When assistance arrived it was found that Mr. Clifton was seriously injured. Medical assistance was obtained, and j the sufferer had to be carried on a t stretcher for 2J milea over rough to.ilI ings before an ambulance could be used for his removal to the Westland Hosj pital. His injuries include a wide wound on the top of his head, concussion and much bruising, in addition to which he is suffering from shock. His condition is serious, although he has rallied remarkably. : i
