' Arising out of the arrest of a Maori < name William Nuire on July 7 in connection with a charge of victimising Wha- < ngarei business firms by means of forged i cheques for considerable amounts, details of which have already appeared, accused again appeared at the Magistrte's Court, Whangarei, to-day before Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M. Iv view of the ; sensational disclosures expected the Courthouse was crowded. Detective De Norville prosecuted, and outlined that nine charges would be preferred against • Kaire, including breaking, entering, irson (setting fire to store), and seveu ■charges of forgery. The cheques which, had been issued by accused had been traced to the ownership of Robert Whitelaw, whose store at Kamo had been destroyed by fire on the day previous to the accused passing the 'cheques in Whangarei. On the charge of breaking and entering the storo at Kamo and stealing a cheque book valued at £2, the property of Robert Whitelaw, accused, for whom Mr. O. E. Stout appeared, pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Auckland Supreme Court for trial. On the charge of arson, setting fire to Whitelaw's store at Kamo on July 4, accused also pleaded not guilty. An appeal by counsel that a Prima facie case had not been made out was overruled by the magistrate, accused being committed for trial on this count also at the Auckland Supreme Court. This afternoon procedings against ac- ' cused will be resumed, when seven charges of forgery will be dealt with.
