CONFERENCE TO BE HELD. TRACING ORIGIX OF V.D. At last night's meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board. Mr. M. J. Coyle, actiugihairman, presiding, information was re reived from the Director-General 01 Hospitals to the effect that a hospitals conference would be held during the first week in October, one o£ the principal items for consideration being thait of forming a main hospitals association. The Board agreed to hold a special meeting to consider what remits the Board's delegates should bring before tbe conference. Dental Schools. "The work of the enemies of Auckland," said Mr. G. Knight, when a letter was read, from the Minister of Education statin;,' that the Government had decided against duplicating the chair of dentlstir at the University, one being already established at Otago. "If you add 'political , to the word enemies, you vrill be right," said the chairman. ■ Several other members regretted that the Government had not seen fit to give effect to the opinion of the Departmental Commission that recommended the setting up of a school in Auckland. The chairman of the Board (Mr. WWallace) is at present in Wellington, and as he will probably bring back' important information on the subject it was decided to defer discussion until his return. V.D. and Immigration. "It is very satisfactory to know that immigration is in no way responsible for this disease," said the acting-chairman. The Director-General of Hospitals has been inquiring into the effect of immigration upon the prevalence of venereal disease in New Zealaud, and he asked for the experience of Auckland in tbe mutter. Dr. C. K. Maguire. medical superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, reporting to the Board said there were very few admissions to the .hospital, and the number of newcomers to the Dominion admitted for that class of disease was negligible. Dr. F. Brown, in charge of the special clinic for this disease, reported that practically all the cases were contracted locally, uud ho had no reason to associate it in any waywith immigration. , Relief Committee. Winter is always a busy time for the committee that looks after the matter of relief. During June 38 new cases were considered and 09 cases were revised, making IST for the month, as against 138 in May and 123 in April. The total rations I issued in city and suburbs came to £303, suburbs £113. tinder all headings the value of relief afforded was £174j for the mouth of June, compared with flTlfl in May and £1644 in April. The average number of rations per day was no less than 547 during the month of June. Hospital Returns. In the course of his monthly return the medical superintendent (Dr. C. E. Maguire) stated that' for the month of June there were 461 patients, us against 4i>B in the operations performed at the hospital was 405. Scarlet fever cases numbered five, and diphtheria 33. Interesting Figures. During the month of June tho ambulance made 150 runs, reported the manager (Mr. E. I. Lyell). ana the time occupied on the runs was 74 hours. The other hospital benzine used was 12S cases! cost; £10/18/!t. The casualty cases numbered 22*11, anrl the numbered 174. and the number of treatments was 5670. The number of splints I made and repaired was 43, and the number of instruments sharpened was 216. In the X-ray department 719 photographic films were used.
