WIN FIRST TEST MATCH. A CLOSE GAME. * i The bowling test match Taranaki v. j Auckland, played at the Epsom green | yesterday afternoon, attracted a large ' gathering of local players, and a keenly-contested game resulted in a , victory for the visitors by 156 to 151. The president of the Epsom Club Mr. | J. Wright, extended a hearty welcome I to the teams as also did Mr. Hardley, president of the Auckland centre. Afternoon tea and light refreshments were! provided by Mrs. .Tervis Wright, wife of • the president, and Miss Hodge, of the I Epsom Bowling and Croquet Club. | Eight rinks took part, four being . played on each green, and several exciting games were witnessed. Taranaki went off with the lead, but as the game progressed the scoring was close, and on several occasions the teams were even on the aggregate, being 100, 120, and j 130 all. Smart's rink was the first to j 1 finish, and on the concluding head therI was only a difference of three points bej tween the teams. The visitors were 'lying two when the skips went up, and | Sutherland's only hope of success was Ito break up the head, but in this effort, jhe was unsuccessful, and the game ! ended in favour of Taranaki by the 1 narrow margin of five points.
