RETAIL FOOD PRICES.

SLIGHT INCREASE IN JANUARY FIFTY PER CENT ABOVE JULY, 1914 The Government Monthly Abstract of Statistics for February states that the index numbers for the three food groups as at January 15 was 1600, an increase of 23 compared with December, when it was 1077. and of 49.i">3 per cent as compared with retail prices for July, j 1!)14. In the larger towns an increase j in the price of sugar has accounted for j the rise of 47 points in the groceries I group. The increase of .'!1 points in the index number for the dairy products j group has been occasioned by an all- i round rise in the price of butter and egus. The fall of 12 points for the meat group is due to a small decrease in the price of beef in the larger centres, and of mutton in all towns.
