"Another Old Player" writes : "I was glad to see by 'An Old Player's' letter iv your Thursday's issue that there nro some who are taking a very keen interest in the cricket match. New South Wales v. Auckland, in which some of the greatest cricketers of the day, notably, C. G. Macartney and Warren Bartlslev. will be engaged. While agreeing with" the principle put forward by 'Another Player' of giving Auckland's promising voting players an opportunity of proving" their ability in representative matches, it would be neither complimentary to our very capable visitors nor advantageous to Auckland cricket to depend too much upon inexperienced players against so strong a side as Xew South Wales, 'An Old Plater" lightly proposes to put on the discard list S, a. Smith. N. C. Snedden, L. G. Ilemus. A. Anthony, and It. W. Kowntree. and somewhat ungratefully and ungraciously refers to them as 'has hcens.' To do as he suggests would be to rob Auckland of its three slow bowlers and the admittedly best wicket-keener in NewZealand, and banish Snedden. who has a very tine record in big matches, from representative cricket as a 'has been' when eight years younger than Bardslev and six years younger than Macartney are at present. Ilemus. unfortunately, though almost hack to the form which made him an outstanding hatsnian for many years in Auckland's representative matches, is nut available owing to an injured knee. For my part I am content to leave the selection of Auckland's eleven to those appointed for the purpose, and have no doubt that when published the team will he found to contain a very fair proportion of the younger players", with a sufficient leavening of older and more exnerl"Colt" writes supporting "Old Player's" view that as the chance of an Auckland win Is so remote the opportunity should be taken of giving wholesome experience to the number of young pin vers at th« moment on the fringe of rep. status.
