TROTTING SENSATION.
ACCUSED IN COURT. REMANDED ON BAIL. SOME NEW DEVELOPMENTS. " (By Telegraph.—Press .Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Later information received by the police has led to another remand in the j trotting ease. The five men arrested' were before the Court this morning. William Williamson, William Percy Capes, Charles Hopwood Capes, James Golding, and Walter Medley Hulston were charged with having conspired to defraud the Southland Racing Club by entering a trotting horse in the name of Willie Lincoln in the Oreti Harness ( Trot at a meeting on January 2 under | the name of Look Out. I Williamson was charged separately with having attempted to obtain from a client the sum of £153 by representing that the horse Willie Lincoln was the trotting horse known as Look Out. j Chief Detective Cameron asked for a remand till February 1, at Christchurch. I Mr. A. L- Hobbs, who appeared for all ' the accused, objected. He stated that the police had informed the magistrate j in Dunedin that the final remand would be to Dunedin on January 31, when the police would be prepared to go on with the case. The chief detective said they had received later information that morning, and, in accordance with the wishes of the Dunedin police, he asked for a remand till Friday next, wlien the date of : the hearing at Dunedin would probably be fixed. The magistrate granted a remand. Mr. Hobbs asked for bail, and, in view of the number of remands, requested that tho amount should be as light as possible. The magistrate said the seriousness of the offence alleged and not the number of remands was tho test of the question of bail. Accused would be admitted to bail of £200 and one surety of £200. On the second charge against Williamson, a second surety would be necessary. Mr. Hobbs asked if Golding could be admitted to bail on hie own recogni- > sance. He had received bail on these terms in Dunedin. The magistrate said accused must find a surety.
