NEGLECT OF MEMORIALS.
(To the Editor.} Sir, —There has lately tbeen much controversy as to ■where the memorial to the dead in the late war should be placed at Devonport, and a very great deal of loyalty to the dead has been expressed, but mv attention as secretary of the Soldiers' Mothers' League has been called to another memorial placed to the memory of the dead in the Boer War, and also at Devonport. This is a pond with fountain, and its present condition is a disgrace to all concerned, an expression of disloyalty to the dead, and a menace to the public health of the borough. Just as this neglected memorial reflects upon the want of sincerity on the part of many undertaking these matters, it also bears testimony to the useless waste of money in erecting memorials that in bo short a time the dead are not only forgotten, but their memory buried in a quagmire of slime, rand, and decaying plants.—l am, etc., E. NICOL, -Hon. Sec.
