GOLDEN WEDDING
MR. AND MRS. M. MARTIN. Two of Auckland's old colonists. Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Martin, of Karangahape Road, celebrated tbe fiftieth anniversary of their wedding by a gathering of relatives and friends at the Druids' Hall, North Street, on Monday evening last. Mr. Martin is the eldest son of the hite Antonio and Agnes Martin, formerly of Hobson Street, and was born in Victoria Street in 1552. He spent tbe early part of his career in coastal vessels owner by his father, and was a master mariner for come sixteen years in the days when sailing vessels "were the only means of sea tran.-port in New Zealand. He carried the coastal mails in bis vessels at times, and had a strenuous life on the coast. After leaving the vessels' he worked for a number of years for Messrs. T. and H. Hall, afterwards earning his livelihood as a carpenter. Mrs. Martin is the daughter of the late Mr. James Bevege, coach painter. o£ Cook Street, and came to New Zealand with her parents from Brighton, England in 1857. Mr. and Mrs. Martin have grown up with the city, and have six children, twenty-nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. .Mr. Martin has a fund of interesting anecdotes of the early days, and has lately presented to the Old Colonists' Mu3euni a silver cup won by his father at the first Auckland regatta in 1532, and which was presented by Mr. Williamson.
