NEW LYNN ROADS AND SANITATION.
(To the Editor.) Fir, —The report in your paper of the 24th July, 1923, "Breeze at New j Lynn," is inaccurate. My notice of motion, which was circulated to all the members, vraß as follows: That the following resolution relative to new roads on Melwyn Estate passed at meet- j ing of the Board held on June 25th, 1923, ! be rescinded;" "that dedication of the road be accepted by the Board provided Mr. Wilson will maintain the fillings and cutting:* lor twelve months and erect necessary handrails at culverts." Your paper enlarges on the above by saying "other roading conditions originally agreed upon by the Board to be carried out in tneir entirety." Had the latter part of the work been carried out in accordance with specifications there would have been no cause -to complain on my part, but when it is a case of the people's rates in the near future being spent to make good the failure of others I saw that I must object, as we have plenty to do with the repairs and upkeep of roads, etc., at the present time. I tried to get a seconder to the original motion put but failed. Why ? Because I dared to try to make the owner of the property comply with the specifications put before the Board on the 11th September, 1922. At several points the road falls ehort of being the required width by several feet, and in many other ways, and in the materials used in parts, the agreement with the Board is not carried out. There is also the matter of the sanitary conditions of the district. I have tried over and over again to bring about certain remedies but with little assistance. I tried to get something done in the way of better sanitary matters at the brickworks last January but was told there was nothing the matter there ac the Board was more concerned about the shop area, which -*as then under discussion. Later on at the same meeting I tried again, with no avail. I then considered I had no other remedy than inform the Health Department (which I did), and my effort in the matter has been proved to be warranted. My only desire ie to protect the ratepayers' interests, as these roads if taken over as they are now constructed will cost more money to maintain in the near future than they would do if fully complying with specifications. If the other members will take the trouble to view these roads they may be eorry for their hasty action. I am, etc., HENRY GREEN.
