AUCKLAND RAGING CLUB

GREAT NGRTHERiV MEETING. . RACIWG ll* THE RAIN. LARGE CROWD PRESENT. BIG -TOTE - ' RECEIPTS. The Auckland Racing Club's Great Northern Steeplechase Meeting was advanced another stage at Ellerslie yesterday, when the principal event of the fixture, the Great Northern Steeplechase, was decided. Rain began to fall before racing commenced, and continued moro or less heavy throughout t'ae afternoon, the last race being run in a heavy downpour. Notwithstanding the weather there was a large crowd present, and although the track was very heavy the racing was interesting- The Great Northern Steeplechase fell to the Auckland marc Mary Bruce, which raced in the colours of Mr. W. Preston, this being the lirst occasion a mare has won the event since Muscatel was successful 25 years ago. The victory was very popular, and horse and rider '.vera loudly cheered on returning to scale. Despite the unfavourable conditions the programme was run off right to advertised time, the management, under the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence, being up to Ellerslie standard. THE TOTALISATOR. Speculation was exceptionally brisk, the sum of £82,048 passing through the machine, which represents au increase of £1449-2 on the corresponding day last year. Details are: — AN EXCITING FINISH. The field for the Great Northern Steeplechase was reduced to eleven by the eleventh hour withdrawal of Royal Abbey, General Advance, No Bother, Oranga, and Silverton, No Bother being sore after winning the Green Lane Steeplechase on the opening day, and Oranga was still suffering from the kick he received at the post for the Great Northern Hurdles, and which caused his" withdrawal from that event. They looked a well conditoined lot, and as they did their preliminaries nothing wont down better than Kohu, Tigerland, and Mary Bruce, the last-named making many friends. THE RACE. Taking up their positions at the post Gay Boy was next the rails, with Pittsworth alongside him. and then across the course were Sea De'il, Dick, Thiganthu, Snake, Vociferate. Tigerland, Oakleigh and Kohu and Mary Bruce on the outside. Oakleigh was inclined to be a bit restless at the post, and when the

button was pressed to send them on their long journey Gay Boy, Sea De'il. and Snake were first to catch tho eye, .Snake leading up the hill the first time, but as they raced" at the water Sea De'il had tiiken charge, the field up to this point having jumped splendidly. Dick caused some surprise when lie took up the running as they went along the back, and he led the way wp the incline but they had not really started to race, and the field were going along nicely. The favourite was first to make a mistaKe. coming to grief at the second fence on the hill. Thiganthu being next to drop out, falling at the double in front of the stand, while a little further on Gay Boy was pulled up. As they went up the hill the last time it could be seen that Tigerland was beaten, and Snake, Sea De'il and Oakleigh were also tired, and the issue had narrowed itself down to four, Dick, Mary Bruce, Vociferate, and Pittsworth. Mary Bruce was in front when they reached the first fence on the hill, but tried to stop, and Henderson only got her to buck over, and Dick got a dozen lengths lead on her. while Vociferate had caught her and Pittsworth was the only other to have anything like a chance. As they came down the incline it looked as if Dick was going to bring , off a big surprise, for Mary Bruce was being hard ridden, but she still had a good bit of leeway to make up. Henderson was riding for his life, and Kaan on Dick was ridijlg a desperate finish, and as Mary Bruce gradually crept up inch by inch there was great excitement. The Auckland mare was battling it out gamely, and so was Dick, and as they went past the post locked together there was great cheering, which was renewed when Mary Bruce's name was hoisted on top of the frame. Twelve lengths away Vociferate and Pittsworth were having a great battle for third honours, .a boring finish seeing Vociferate get a narrow decision. fsnake fell at the last fence, being very tired, as were Sea De'il, Oakleigh, and Tigerland, which finished in that order, the last-named being very disappointing. The result was a complete rout of the favourites, although Mary Bruce had a Jot of friends after her good showing in the Great Northern Hurdles on the opening day. Her victory was very popular, for her owner and trainer have stuck to the game in spite of a lot of nad luck, and the success of the daughter of Eobert the Bruce gave them their most important victory to date. S. Henderson rode a good race, and with a less experienced horseman in the saddle she would probably have lost the prize when she tried to stop at the first fence on the hill the last time. Dick ran very true, and is evidently much better than niEI appearance suggests. He is only a little fellow, but fought it out to "the mtter end, and was well handled by Aaan. Vociferate and Pittsworth were twelve lengths away together, and the v e , w t rds consklererl that the last-named °ad been sufficiently interfered with to Prevent him getting third honours, and yeiersed the positions of the judge, niacins Pittevrorth third, and suspended K. J-iunt the rider of Vociferate, for six months. It was an unpleasant ending ° a fine race. Kohu was going well anTs , fel1 ' but Tigerland, Sea De'il, if,-i j c Wore ver . v disappointing, and "■iiied to stay.

HISTORY REMITS ITSELF, twenty-five carded came out for George Handicap, and punters made Comical a red-hot favourite, eiinn, j g "" with over two thousand Pounds, and nearly twice as much as ■anolioro, the second fancy, while the bracket, Cool Stimulants and Loyal £*>&, and Strategy, all went over four ngwes, the order of the othera in the netting being Arch .Salute, the bracket "lununation, aud Refinement, Ivareao, £Utc Sound, Joy Ride, Viyella, Some Regent, fiold Kip, Sunny Jim, Jolly Princess, Tama-a-roa, ",™ v "' G°l(len Bubble, Queens Up, »nd Master O'Rorke, with Prince Rufus

conlH lder - The best the favourite could do was to run second, for after tolden Bubble and Jolly Princess had turns at making the pace, Strate-v • £ rae '«i»ngh in the straight, and keep*•"Th i V) VOurite oir won b y a length and a-half. Tinohoro, which was well up all the way, was three-parts of a length further back, third. .Strategy "on the same event two years ago. AN EASY ONE. The Curragh and Huaker reserved ior the last event were the only withdrawals from the Panmure Hurdle Race T\ ? oyal Abbp y was ma<le a etron s nrst fancy, being about a thousand pounds better fancied than Tempo, the second choice, with Sir Wai and Mowing .howl going over four figures, and money came for Lark Hall, White Ranger ana Banogue. Narrow Neck made the run"S m J°r about six furlonge, with Lark Hall and Lady Bruce handy, but when the two last named fell along the back. Royal Abbey took charge, followed by jl* lowing Bowl, the favourite realh making a race of it, winning by a dozen lengths, with Lady Bruce six lengths away, third. Banogue, White Ranger, Narrow Neck and Lark Hall came to grief, and Tresor and I'takura were pulled up. RUX IX THE RAIX. \ omig Thurnnam and Kilbird were the defections from the Carbine Plate, the gentleman riders' event, and heavy rain was falling as the horses were al the post, and the race was run in a blinding shower. Kahikatea was made a very short-priced favourite, with just over a thousand pounds more on his number than The Curragh, Ktihikatea carrying more money than any horse on the day. Glcnidle and .Merrie Prince had friends, the others only getting halfhearted support. The race proved the good thing the betting indicated, toi after King Pcllicule had made the running to the straight the favourite ran to the front to draw away and win easily by four lengths from King Pelli cule, which lasted long enough to beat the fast-finishing Monopole by half a length, with The Curragh fourth. YOUNG THURNHAM A WINNER. The nine carded came out for the Hunt Club Cup, and Waikawa wound up an eight pound better favourite tna. Glenotue, with Kovno. Young Thurnham. Joffre, Hokemai and Te Kapara all more or less fancied. Hokemai was responsible for most of the pace, but going up the hill the last time Kovno ran through and had charge at the top where Hokemai, Young Thurnham and Glenotus were handy, but the favourite at thie stage was beaten. Kovno led into the straight, but there Young Thurnham and Glenotue came on the scene. Young Thurnhajn winning hie first race over country by a length. Kovno got third, a length and a-half away, with Waikawa fourth. ONE FROM NAPIER. The twenty acceptors came out for the Ranfurly Handicap, ami it came as no -surprise to see Kilbird established a good favourite, the Xapier-owned gelding carrying nearly four hundred pounds more than Tinopono, the second fane}', the pair both going over the four-figure mark, b\it it was a good betting race, and Haligan. Pretty Man, Just Quietly, Electrode, Arizona Maid and Otapawa all got solid 'backing. The last-named was the early pilot, then Peter Rosa took the field along, but once in the straight, Kilbird came through, followed by Tinopono and Pretty Man, the Southerner winning comfortably by a length and a-half, Tinopono being a similar distance in front of Pretty Man, with Dancing Doll fourth. PETER AMANS WINS NICELY. I The eight carded came out for the I Remuera Hurdle Race, and En Route, j which was considered unlucky in the i Great Northern Hurdle Race, was made a strong favourite, six hundred odd pounds better fancied than Tinokaha, each having over two thousand pounds on his number, and Mia Bella, King Abbey, Peter Amajis and Penury Rose all going over four figures, Opaloid being at a long price. King Abbey set the pace in the early stages, and at one stage 'had a commanding lead, but passing the stand En Route, Peter Amans and Tinokaha were all handy. King Abbey was taking a risk at every fence, and En Route ran past iTiim crossing the top, and Tinokaha and I Peter Amans also beaded him. Just as a I shout went up for En Route, he hit the fence by the mile and a-half post hard, and Tinokaha and Peter Amans then had a duel home, Peter Amans staying the longer and getting the verdict by three lengths. Penury Rose finished fast over j the last few furlongs and nearly caught Tinokaha, only failing by a neck. I En Route and King Abbe}' came to i grief at the last fence, and Mia Bella at i the obstacle hy the mile and a-half post, I the first time round. Golden Bubble led the field across the top, but coming to the home turn Jolly Princess had charge, and she was first into the straight, i with Viyella, Tinohoro, Loyal Irish and : Strategy all handy. The last named shot to the front at the distance, and, stalling off Comical's finishing effort, won by a length and a-half. Narrow Neck piloted the field along the back, but he fell at the fence bringing Lark Hall to grief, nnd Royal Abbey ran to the front crossing the top.
