HONOURS.

The item in the New Zealand list of King's Birthday honours that has most interest for our readers is the C.M.G. given to tho late headmaster of the Grammar School. Mr. Tibbs has mado himself an institution in Auckland, and the honour is a well-earned recognition of long and devoted servico in the great cause of education. Such honours as those conferred on Mr. Firth, of Wellington, and Mr. Ti'bbs are paid to the profession ns well as to the individual, and wo may see the time when they who mould and train tho minds and characters of men nnd women are eligible for the same marks of recognition as those who succeed in -business and perhaps mingle with that bucccss some | services to the public. Mr. Justice ! Chapman becomes a knight on the eve of his final retirement from the Pencil, to whose weight and prestige he has contributed for twenty years. A sound lawyer, a man of wide culture, and an able and courteous judge, he has won universal respect and admiration. We doubt if it is as generally realised as it should be what a priceless asset is j the ability, integrity, and impartiality of our Supreme Court Bench. The knighthood conferred on Mr. Robert Nolan will come as a surprise t_ most people, but those acquainted with the inner workings of Now Zealand's war effort in England know that ho did admirable ivork las a friend of our soldiers. A feature |of the honours list is the absence of | party favours. The Government could ' afford to call a halt in this respect.
