SHIPS' LIQUOR SUPPLIES.
AMERICAN CONFISCATION. NO "TOT" FOR THE CREWS. WASHINGTON, May 4. The Secretary of the Treasury (Mr. A. \V. Mellon) has amplified his statement regarding the enforcement of prohibition ill American territorial waters. He declares that no foreign ships violating the prohibition regulations will be seized. Liquor found aboard will be confiscated, but there is no legal authority for penalising shipowners. He explains that the new ruling does not involve medical liquors carried by ships, or Embassy supplies, but it does involve the rations of crews, which situation will be met when it arises.— (A. and X.Z.)
THE HONOLULU CALL. (Received 10.30 a.m.) VANCOUVER, May 4. Canadian-Australasian Shipping Co. officials deny the statement attributed to them that their boats will not call at Honolulu on account of the liquor restriction decision.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
When Mr. Daugherty's ruling was first issued it was considered that it probably would be of great benefit to' the Canadian ports, and at the same time would not injure British shipping. The opinion was that the L'nited States would be the only loser, and that the Dominion of Canada stands to gain a lot. The "Times" printed details shown j that travellers would lose little time and gain in other ways by going to Quebec instead of Xew York." The news, paper believed that even if some liners continued to make New York their western terminus there would still be an increase in the popularity of the Canadian ports. The " Daily Telegraph , ' quoted an official of the Cunard line in Liverpool as saying that the British steamship operators would stand to suffer a big loss if they continued to operate their ships to United States ■ ports under the now dry ruling, and that lit would he better for them to divert some ships to Halifax or other Canadian ! ports than to lose the profits from the ' sale of intoxicants. He did not. doubt : that, many United f-tates passengers ] would prefer the inconvenience.
