A SKILL COM_PETITW_rt| GAMLNTG ACT PROSB)ODTIO_i* There was a case of unusual TnUiO* at the Police Court to-day, when AjrOmf Cleave and Co., Ltd., publishers of the "Sporting and Dramatic Review," *e ra charged that on September 20, _$>*> "bein£ the occupier of certain premises in Vulcan Lane, did use the said premises for the purpose of money being received as and for the consideration of an express promise to pay or eiy. thereafter money, on the contingency of a horse race." Mr. V. R. Meredith prosecuted (under the Gaming Act 190S), and Mr. R. McVeagh appeared lor I lie defendant company. The sedition followed the publication in "The Sporting and Dramatic Review" of a free "racing skill competition," in which a prize of £100 was offered '.to the reader who contd select the first three horses in the order they finished in the Auckland Cup. The offer stated: "A knowledge of the correct form of the horses engaged in this race should enabl« readers to earn the prize. A study of our racing news and training notes ivill greatly assist in his competition."
