BIRKENHEAD SCHOOL FAIR.
A very successful "-Olde English Kavrc." organised by Birkenhead residents to raise funds for the improvement of tbe local sideschool grounds, was held ou Saturday afternoon, some 600 persons being present.
The chairman of the School Committee. Mr. K. Darldw. referred to tbe generosity of the Mayor. Mr. J. W. Court (who opened the fain in donating the flag and pole erected in the grounds. A sum of f9OO was required with which to construct a rockery on the Mokoia Itoad frontage, to plant shelter trees, and make provision for outdoor classes, the hope being expressed that the latter project would be aiciently advanced to allow of suitable « mmodation by next February for the of the children being taught in the open-air during summer months. The last effort on the part of the residents realised £270, which had been expended on inside equi|>_icnt, Including a piano, pictures for the wall, and a library.
The Fair Committee, of whifh Messrs. H. J. Woodhams and Edgar Wallis were chairman and secretary respectively, had made excellent arrangements, and all the methods observed at such fairs for relieving patron l , of surplus cash were employed, including ■stalls, games, competltons, "arrests," placing the victims in the stocks, and imposing tines. By these sundry devices tbe sum of £110 was handed over to the promoters, besides subscriptfou lists totalling a further j £100. This very satisfactory response will i allow of portion of the work being under-1 taken forthwith. i
The Birkenhead Municipal Brass Band played selections throughout the afternoon.
