AUXILIARIES AMBUSHED. MOTOR LORRIES CAPTURED. LONDON, January 30. Major Holmes and a squad of auxiliaries, proceeding in two motor lorries, were ambushed near Castle. Island, Kerry, by 40 rebels, firing from behind fences oil both sides of the roadway. Major Holmes was seriously wounded and one constable was shot dead. A Dublin Castle statement is to the effect that the raiders used two machine guns. Thep- disarmed the auxiliaries and took the cars.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) WASHINGTON, January 0. The Department of Labour has ordered Mr. D. O'Callaghan, the Lord Mayor of Cork, who recently arrived without a passport, to leave the United States by February 11. Mr. Mason (Illinois), in the House of Representatives, offered an amendment to the Diplomatic and Consular Appropriotion Bill authorising the appointment of a "Minister to the Republic of Ireland." The motion was ruled out of order. A group of Quakers has sailed (or Ireland for the purpose of ascertaining for the American Committee for Irish Relief what measures of relief are needed. Mr. R. N. Sweetman. Sinn Fein M.P. for North Wexford, has resigned owing to differences with tbe Dail Eirann. Mr. Swectrnan advocates immediate peace m Ireland.—(A and NZ Cafcle^.
