DWELLING HOUSES FIRST.
[ RESTRICTIONS OX BUILDING. (By Telegraph.— Asewiation.) WELLINGTON, this day. J The shortage of houses throughout the _, Dominion has become so acute that Cabinet has agreed, in an effort to aid ! the rapid construct ii of. dwellings, that i iv future practically only essential buildings are to proceed. A brief announce--1 ment to this effect was made by the Prime Minister this morning, but no details of the means of carrying the -eeision into effect are available. The ' decision of Cabinet does not apply to buildings already in course of construction. It is understood that do new legislation will be needed to give effect , to the proposal, but that advantage will , be taken of a war regulation, which makes it necessary for the approval of the Minister of Finance to be secured when the erection of a building costing more than £3500 is contemplated. The new conditions expected come into force almost immediately.
