FUNERAL AT WHAKATANE.
(By Telefrraph.—Press Association.) WHAKATAXE, this day. The largest funeral seen here in recent years took place yesterday, when Mrs. Marion L. Smith, relict of the late Mr. E. L. Smith, well known throughout the Bay of Plenty, was interred. Represntative public men attended. Deceased's late husband shifted the Commercial Hotel building here from Waiorongomai. He was also licensee of the Star Hotel at Tauranga, and built the Club boardinghouse at Te Puke, where he died some years ago.
The "law's delays" have become proverbial. Latterly a custom has developed in the -Magistrate's Court of requests being made for cases to stand down till the afternoon. an application was made this morning to Mr. F. X- Hunt. 531., who promptly said be saw no reason why everyone should be kept waiting about for the convenience of one man. He contended that t&e practice ■was bad, and said if one aide was not ready when the case was called it ehoujd be adjourned until the next sitting of the Court. One lawyer walked into Court just after his case had been called and was informed he was just in time Ito save it being struck out" for non 1 appearance. Several "other cases *wer« struck out for non appearance.
