In the Police Court to-day Edward Martin and Bert Brown were remanded to Auckland on a charge of rape alleged to have been committed in that city. These men are alleged to have been the companions of Franklin John Smith, vaudeville conjuror, in an incident at a house in Vincent Street, on Sunday, April IS, as the result of which Smith 1 was arrested the following Tuesday, and wae subsequently committed to the Supreme Court for trial on a charge ot I rape. A search for Martin and Brown resulted in the discovery that they had left the city, and notifications were sent to the Southern police that they were wanted. As the criminal session of the Supreme Court at Auckland opened today, the preliminary hearing against the accused will tie too late to enable them to stand trial at the same time as Smith in the event of prima facie caee being made out against them.
