AMALGAMATED PRESIDENT'S COMMENT.

SOME IL-ifRD THINIONC,. (Ry Telegraph. -Special to "Star.'*) AYELI/INGTON, Friday. \ nieia/'t-tliat ithad been agreed -fhafcthp' terms of sct;"__cment shfluld be announced only wheu Mr. Massey was ready to do s-o hampered tlio president <?f the Amalgamated Society in making a statement to your correspondent to-night, as he could not deal with the result in detail. As a preliminary he read the following telegram, showing the instructions sent to North Island branches of his organisation before noon to-day: — 'The A.S.R.S. strike is declared off, a settlement, having been arrived at -by agreement, and endorsed by the Transport Workers' Advisory Board. Men must, report for duty at once.— (Si-med) R. Hampton (president), M. J. ..rack (secretary).'' As for"*he settlement, .raid Mr. Hampton, the subject is a big one, and, if I liked to talk and review the position 1 fully, I could tell you enough to fill a newspaper. The average editor and the man in the street thought .they knew all about the strike and its cause, but it is questionable if they know as much as they think they know. Close investiga- • tion into -_he real origin of the trouble would well repay the Government and , the people of this country, and, without going into detail. I am prepared to 1 say .hat some past and present members ol" the Railways Committee in the ' House are at present thinking very hard. I hope that our members will go back ' to work just as loyally as they abided by the executive's call to come out. I have nothing further to say, except that I I am taking an early opportunity of i putting the full position to our members I throughout the Dominion, and making a start in Christchurch on Sunday."
