POINT IN DISPUTE.
RETROSPECTIVE ADVANCES. j LOCO. MEN INSIST ON A YEAR. WELLINGTON, this day. The point in dispute between the Prime Minister and the Loco, men is that Mr. Massey wanted one clause to t read that if a commission to be i appointed decided to moke any im- ' proveruent in wages and conditions retrospective, he would accept the recoin- . * mendation. The Loco, men requested | r that the Prime Minister should sign up : , an agreement providing that any im-; provemente made ehould date back to April 1, 1910, when the dispute began. 'Mr. McArley said: "In accepting another ; Board or Commission we were going : * ■ against the wishes of our members, who |. 1 demanded that a full and complete I 1 settlement should be effected before they , i •assumed work. We accepted the Commis- [ . sion in order to try to run trains for j the reception of the Prince, and for that j reason oniy; and the point in dispute | ' ■means that we asked the Prime Minister j. 'to jiaaure us by his signature that the improvements in wages and conditions ! j would be retrospective to April, 1319. ' •The Prime Minister insists that this J should be left to the .Commission. We j j have consulted our representatives, and ' they insist that a full and complete signed-up settlement ehall be effected in the present dispute, which is 12 months (old; in fact, the main pSints are ten [years old."
