When knives arc stained after rubbing them irii.li bathbrick. sprinkle the board with a little «irbonate of soda, and rub To clean copper use powdered bathbrick mixed with oil, or 'turpentine; <>r with lemon juice and fine sand. Apply with a rag, polish with a dry flannel, and finish with chamois and dry brickdu<t. A piste made of oil and wijrhting will also clean copper articles. To keep tins bright, take a small lump of sotla, dissolve it ill water and add .1 small quantity of sand, then rub the tills briskly with the mixture, using crushed newspaper instead nf a i-loth. Polish on , dry with fresh, dry newspaper, and the tins should look beautifully bright. Soft newspaper is, again, an excellent thing with which to polish mirrors. A broom lliat is hung up will, says a housewife, outwear the that stands in a corner. The same adviser declares that scorch may be removed from woollen goods by rubbing the marks with a large silver coin. "Hold tile material firmly in one hand," she. says, "and rub hard with the other." A good colouring for soups, gravies, sauces, et.-., is made, in this way: .Melt a quarter of a pound of granulated sugar in a saucepan and let it get dark brown. Stir all the time, making quite sure that it does not burn. When brown, pour over it carefully a quart of boiling water, and let it cook until the sugar is quite, dissolved. Pour it out and when cold strain and bottle. Use a tablespoonful to a pint of liquid. This ■will keep any length of tune. Cleaning; Suede Shoes.—As so many people know to their cost, tho leatherafter a while, becomes badly soiled, and the shoes look too untidy to wear long before they am worn out. The remedy is found in the use of sandpaper Get two grades—one of the finest obtainable, and the other of a rather Coarser quality. First of all, rub the spots with the coarse paper until they disappear. Then go over the places with the finer prained paper until the extreme roughness is taken aivav.
