MANUKAU COUNTY COUNCIL.
1The Manukau cinmty Council met yesterday morning, Mr. F. M. Waters being in the chair in the absence of the chairman, Mr. A. D. Bell. There were also present: Councillors J. Lake. S. W. Hawes. A. E. Hattaway, A. D. Reid, and F. H. Brownhill. A letter was received from the Land and Survey Department stating that the sum of £(*,_ was avllablelfor cutting gorse on the !F>i>les_nn settlement, In the Mangere riding. The Department, however, could not spare a man to do i the work. The matter •was therefore left) in the hands of the engineer and member for riding. The erection of a wharf at Tnranga Creek was brought up fpr discussion through receipt of a letter pn the subject from a resident of the riding. Another letter from the Marine Department stated that the Department's liability in this connection is £1000. As 'the estimate of the work is £.'OOO the Government cannot carry out the same, but will hand pver the money available when the local I authority erects the same. It was decided to reply to the first correspondent to the elffect that the council could not subsidise tbte £1000, but suggesting that the matter '.was one for a loau over a special rating area. The question of expenditure items for road works was the ijubstance of a communication from the Public Works Department. In view of thei doubtless desire of local bodies to take full advantage of the summer weather in undertaking such work the Minister Is prepared to issue authorities for formation and metalling re>ads provided on a subsidy basis Immediately detailed ►Inns, specification and estimates of cost have been prepared by tbe council and approved by the engineer of the district.
