NORTH SHORE INTERESTS.

WAITEMATA CHAMBEB OF COMMERCE. DEVONPORT'S >*EEDS. The Waitenrata Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting last evening. The president (Mr. W. J. Fordiain) presided over a good attendance. In the annual report reference iwas made to the courteous and busadne&s-like manner in. which the many matters referred to ithe Borough Council 'had been dealt with. The Chamber ha<i interested itself in the hydro-electric schemes, and also in post and telegraph matters. Attention 'had been given to the pilfering of cargo, and the Minister had been asked to give magistrates more power in dealing with offences of this kind. Railway matters had also been dealt with. The following officers were elected: — President, Mr. J. Henderson; vice-presi-dent, 11 r Rces-Cleorge; secretary, Mr. L. Waters; treasurer, Mr. .T. Lowe (reelected) ; council, Messrs. R. H. Dellow, F. Heldt, I. Massey. J. \V. Pordham, B. Tudor and J. T. Day. The newly-elected president, on taking his scat, said the most important matter before Abe CHiiunbur was the provision of improved transit bet/ween Devonport a-iid Auckland and the other Shore boroughs. The area of the four Xorth Shore boroughs was 7.534 acres, which was greater than that of the Auckland city iiTra and Grey Lynn. He felt that with adequate and modern 'transit the trend of population would be across the harbour, and. with :i good service to Devonport, and the linking up of all the North boroughs with a modern .tram service, Devonport would become the natural centre. Better roads were also needed, and he was of opinion that with a system of tar sealing the roading problem could be solved without borrowing to any great o.xtont. Through the efforts of Mt. VV. Wallace, district representative of the Harbour Board, the new Vie- | toria wharf had been placed on the schedule of works. The Board should be askod to prepare plans so that the work could be put in hand when the time was opportune. Improved telephone communication with the city was also needed. Tt was decided to ask the Bank of Xew Zealand t.i provide Devonport with all-day banking facilities. A -tribute was paid to the useful work that l)ad been done hv the retiring secretary, Mr. A. H. On til.
