SHANTUNG AGREEMENT
A TRUCULENT SENATOR. '"WORLD'S SABRE-RATTLER." BRITAIN AND HER RIVALS. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) .(Received 9.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 17. In the Senate to-day Senator L V Sherman (Republican) urged the United States to refuse to acknowledge the Shantung agreement, which was tainted and poisoned. Though they professed altruism to the Allies, the Shantung agreement would enable Japan to fill Germany's role as the world's sabrerattler. With British and Japanese interests in the Far East identical the United States would be obliged to look to the safety of the Philippines. An Asiatic Kaiser one day may seek to dominate all Asia. Britain was devoid of sentiment and humanity whenever the opportunity of breaking" trade rivals arose.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
