BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was held last night. The Deputy-Mayor, Cr. E. G. Skeates, presided, and Crs. A. Hadfield, E. C. Walton, ißobt. Taylor, A. E. Wood, 11. Boardmau, P. C. Backhouse and Robert Webb were also ' present. Mayor's Absence. —It was reported by the chairman that the Mayor had suffered a recurrence of his receut illness. A vote of sympathy with Mr J. P. Mcl'hail In his Indisposition was carried unanimously. Sanitation Kate. —A deputation from the ißirkdale Fruitgrowers' Association, of which Messrs Campbell, Brook, Klnisly. and Peace acted as spokesmen, placed before the Council the view of Birkdale ratepayers- 1 that, as the service was not extended to that section of the borough, no expenditure in connection therewith should be defrayed from the rates raided in Birkdale, from the reservoir to the western end of the boroush. Iv accordance with notice. Cr, Walton moved to resrind the resolution of the Council on 2nd inst.—viz., •'That the sanitation service estimate uml proposed feo be deleted, that the general rate be increased by 3-Sd iv the £. and that charges
and expenses in connection with carrying out .the sanitation service be paid out of the general rate." The chairman seconded, the motion to rescind being enrried on his casting vote, the division being:—For, Crs. Walton, Skeates, Taylor and Wood! against, Crs. Hadfleld, Webb, Backhouse, and Boardman. Intention to reopen the matter at the next meeting was announced.. Highbury Corner. — A communication from Messrs Lennard and Abbott inquired the amount of compensation the Council would offer for the portion of Highbury Corner, required for road widening purposes. It was resolved to take the laud forthwith under the Public Works Act. Football Ground.—An application from the Northcote Association Football Club for a playing ground (forwarded by the Northcote Council with the suggestion that It be considered at the meeting of the joint Councils), was referred to the secretary of the Little .Shoal Bay reserve, to he dealt with by that committee. Albany Mail.—Mr L. .1. Foley, who has I the contract for the carriage of the Albany mail, wrote drawing attention to the need of repairs in Glenfleld Itoad. The Council I instructed the foreman of works to carry out necessary repairs.
