LOCAL ELECTIONS.
AN "ONWIiILDT SYSTEMSUGGESTED ALTERATIONS. t (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Mr. James Ames, Chief Returning Officer for the Municipal Elections, made important recommendations for a new policy at a meeting of the City Council last "evening. Mr. Ames said the work has grown at an alarming extent, and the system of electing Mayor, councillors, Harbour Board, Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on the same day had become i unwieldy. He recommended that the city 1 should be cut up into five electorates, and, 1 further, considered that citizens should be called upon to elect only the Mayor and councillors on the one day, Harbour Board to undertake their own elections, and the City Council to nominate members of the Hospital Board. He also considered that the municipal roll should be compiled by responsible officers, somewhat on the principle of obtaining a census.
On the motion of the Mayor a committee was set up to go into the whole matter with the returning officer.
