LORD'S DAY ALLIANCE.
ANNUAL MEETING. OFFICERS ELECTED. The annual meeting of the Lord's Day Alliance was held in the parish hall of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre last evening. The president (Dr. Averill. the Anglican Bishop of Auckland) was unahle to be present, and in his absence the chair was occupied by the Rev. I. Jolly, vice-president of the Association, who was accompanied on the platform by the Revs. Canon Haselden, E. McFarlaiid. E. 'MoNicoll, Mr. Edward Smith, and the speakers of the evening. The annual report showed a successful year and a satisfactory state of funds. In his introductory remarks, the chairman drew attention to the rapid decline of Sunday observance. Much of this laxity, he observed, had sprung from the past strenuous war-time days, but, apart from this, the British Sunday was rapidly approaching the Continental observance. Excellent addresses were given by Mr. Ernest Aldridge and the Rev. J. W. j Shaw. M.A. The former spoke of Sunday from the standpoint of a day of rest. The other privileges that mankind enjoys come from ancient customs, but the privilege of one day's rest in seven had a divine origin. The Rev. Shaw spoke of it as a day of retreat from the world and a day of worship. It was through the Church's interposition that we possessed a seventh part of our whole life.for meditation and rest. The following officers were elected: — President. Rt. Rev. Bishop Averill: vicepresidents. Revs. I. .Tolly. C. H. Laws, and Mr. Edward Smith. The office of secretary and treasurer was left vacant until it could be filled at a meeting of the executive.
