NORTH SHORE RAILWAY.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—To Auckland's 10,000 children and its other drinkers of milk, the starting of the North Shore railway northwards promises to be one of the great events of the year 1019. From a rough guess as to the course it /will take before linking with the Helensville line T estimate it will bring over 100,000 acres of potential good dairying land within profitable reach of a milk supplytraffic with Auckland city. The land (omitting the razorback areas) beside yielding fair pasturage of certain selected grasses and clovers, is far more capable of fodder growing than is commonly supposed. Maize fodder six or eight feet high is not exceptional. With our scattered settlement up here the erection of butter and cheese factories is attended with financial risks which no settler with a living to make desires needlessly to incur. And there i 6 always the danger of the present high prices not holding. The fresh milk traffic therefore appeals to him as a simpler business and reasonably lucrative, and with our splendid climate—carrying fodder crops right through into spring—we could specialise in a winter milk supply. Aucklanders can assist the northern settler to attain this result by encouraging in every possible way the speedyconstruction of the line. T understand the fate of the proposal will be settled for good or ill during the next three months. Will the men and 'Women of Auckland, w-ho have all the power, join hands with us northerners .in some' definite way to bring this great though inexpensive scheme into effect. —I am, etc., A. G. SAINSBURY. Pukeatua, March 17.
