HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME.

PROGRESS AT WAIKATO WORKS. TESTING THE ARAPUNI DAM SITE.

The Minister of Public Works (Sir William Fraser), in discussing to-day the progress of the hydro-electric scheme for the North Island, said: "I notice that an inference has been made that I had started the Mangahoe electric works and had established an assistantengineer there, but inferring at the same time that I had done nothing for the Waikato works. Tlie fact is that a few days after my visit to Mangahoe I spent two days on the Waikato River examining with Mr. Parry the Horahora works and the proposed site for the Arapuni works. An engineer is now in charge at Arapuni, and a start has also been made with the exploration shafts for testing the strata which the dam will have to be placed, thus showing that I have not forgotten the interests of Auckland."

"In regard to the Horahora works I at onees obtained the consent of the Government to enter into negotiations with the Wailii Company respecting their possible purchase."
