I BANKRUPTCY PETITION ABANDONED. AN APPEAL FOR CLEMENCY. The petition to have J. C. Harrison , who ivas recently sentenced to six yeans' ' imprisonment for the sheep-dip frauds' declared bankrupt, was to havr> been further heard at the Supreme Court this morning. Mr. Stanton, for the petitioning creditor (New Zealand Express Co) asked Mr. Justice Hoskinp for leave to , withdraw the petition. He stated that ,an investigation had shown that no advantage was to be gained by proceeding with it. All the creditors concurred in this. Mr. Singer, who ;.ooeared for I Harrison, offered no objection, and the withdrawal was allowed. Harrison, who was in Court, took the opportunity to ask the Judge to reconsider the sentence passed on him. "I J owe a lot of money," he said, "and iv I am given a chance I can pay all these people. It is a very heavy sentence. ,. His Honor: It will cotae to less than six years if you are of good beliavioue. In any case you will come under the Prisons Board, for there is a provisioD that enables them to review sentences, of more than three years. Harrison: They will go on the police report of mc, your Honor. Ilis Honor: I am sure that they will act justly. I cannot discuss the matter further. Harrison was then removed from the Court.
