THE MOTUIHI ESCAPE.
COMPENSATION FOR SEIZURE OF MOA. A spqnel to the seizure of the LeylandO'Brien Timber Company's scow Mo*, which was taken by the Germans in their sensational escape from Motuihi. is a petition of the company to Parliament for compensation for the loss* sustained. The grounds for the petition are that when the vessel was commandeered. Yon. Luekner and his men jet tisoned a portion of the cargo of timber, valued at £304 3/10: 45 fathoms of cable, valued at £59 10/8; and a coil of wire rope, valued at £53 2/5. It is also claimed that upon inspection of the vessel in Auckland, after the recapture, it was ascertained that the vessel had been severely strained, which ncceßitated an expenditure of £285 16/5 in order to re-commission her. Consequent dislocation of their business is estimated by the owners as a loss of £405. It is pointed out by the petitioners that the prisoners of war were interned by the Government, and that the commandant of the internment cpma allowed them, without reasonable excuse, to escape.
